Clélia Moncorgé ( Karisma Consulting ) braved the cold to meet Gabriel Leenders at his family domain in Jarzé . Consistently ranked in the top five NH trainers by prize-money since 2020 , Gabriel Leenders is known for his talent in training horses , securing high-level victories in France and abroad and his warm , approachable personality . Gabriel Leenders passionately explains his work with young horses when they arrive from pre-training . “ It ’ s like spelling : once you know how to spell , you ’ re good at dictation , and so on . It ’ s the same with obstacle racing . You need solid fundamentals to have well-trained horses on race day .” A few weeks before the reopening of the obstacle season , Leenders also discusses the goals for his horses , particularly the three-year-olds preparing for spring events .

THE TREADMILL : A MULTIFACETED ALLIED The treadmill for horses has become an essential tool in racehorse training , particularly in Australia , where its use has significantly grown in recent years . Although it represents a considerable investment - ranging from 40,000 to 80,000 Australian dollars - it is now frequently available in training centers , making it accessible to a larger number of trainers . This enthusiasm , especially pronounced in Australia , is not due to any unsuitability for European horses but rather to an increasing recognition and understanding of its numerous benefits . The treadmill allows for the collection of precise training and recovery data . Its use also makes it possible to collect lactate measurements after exercise , which is much more difficult to achieve on a traditional track . These regularly collected data provide a much deeper understanding of the horses and the physical and metabolic intensity of various exercises performed . This enables targeted adjustments to training programm . Thanks to this tool , it is possible to improve horses ’ performance without systematically increasing the intensity of track sessions , a major asset for certain horses with longer careers who are no longer in their learning phase . The adjustable incline and speed settings make it possible to design custom exercises , such as speed variations or interval gallops , which are difficult to replicate on a traditional track . These exercises target specific muscle groups , improve lactate
