Beach Boys Pet Sounds The passing of Brian Wilson on June 11 calls for a tribute. Forty-nine years ago, the brilliant Beach Boys composer released a UFO of an album: Pet Sounds. Wouldn’ t It Be Nice, God Only Knows... tracks forever etched in time. This album is a landmark work, a pop revolution like no other, capturing“ a thousand shades of feeling.” In 1966, the Beach Boys left behind the surf wave to dive into a lush symphony of magical instruments and sounds. Upon release, the album flopped in the U. S., but earned the admiration of Paul McCartney, who still calls it an“ absolute classic.” In the ongoing creative duel between the Beatles and the Beach Boys, Pet Sounds prompted the former to respond with another baroque and psychedelic miracle: Sgt. Pepper’ s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The Last Dinner Party Nothing Matters Garorock, Beauregard, and Eurockéennes mark the first weekend of July, with Musilac and Lollapalooza right behind. Just a year after a highly talked-about performance at Rock en Seine, the
London-based quintet is taking the festival circuit by storm. They’ re often compared to Kate Bush for their baroque flourishes, ABBA for their all-female appeal, and Queen or David Bowie for their glam-rock flair. Dressed in ball gowns and Victorian corsets, the five musicians of The Last Dinner Party have seen a meteoric rise: opening for the Rolling Stones within a year of forming, and topping the charts with their debut( and only) album, aptly titled Prelude to Ecstasy. Not to mention, they count Mick Jagger and Nick Cave among their early fans.
Charli XCX Guess Between the Jockey Club and the Prix de Diane, Charli XCX took We Love Green festival in the Bois de Vincennes by storm— followed by an afterparty with Air, no less. Let it be said: summer 2025 isn’ t going to skip a new Brat season. Already the soundtrack of summer 2024, the British phenomenon— with 3 Grammys and 5 Brit Awards— has become more than a pop star: she’ s the face of a movement, an icon of freedom and rebellion, oozing coolness, provocation, and a masterclass in marketing. But here’ s the bottom line: when it comes to production, she dominates the game. Take the remix of Guess by The Dare featuring Billie Eilish— Charli XCX rides the hyperpop wave like no other.
