immediate success at stud, achieving three Group 1 winners in his first crop – including Prix Saint-Alary( Gr. 1) victor Vazira and Deutsches Derby( Gr. 1) hero Sea The Moon. He has consistently produced high-class performers in each crop and offspring continue to return to Longchamp, with early crop representatives Cloth Of Stars and Sea Of Class placing in the Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe( Gr. 1). Sea The Stars was quick to find a niche – a producer of quality three-year-olds, capable of Classic campaigns and improving as an older horse.“ He produces a variety of horses but it’ s fairly well-established at this stage that what he’ ll give you is a very high-class three-year-old,” explained Pat Downes, director of Aga Khan Studs.“ I think people accept that. When they’ re going to the sales, they’ re not looking for a Sea The Stars which looks like it’ ll be sharp – people understand. If you’ ve got a horse that is going to take time, the chances are you’ ll have a very nice three-yearold.” Patience has been key with both of Sea The Stars’ current leading French representatives Sosie and Aventure, despite both being sharp enough to win as juveniles. The pair have flourished as four-year-olds, with Sosie achieving backto-back Group 1 victories in the Prix Ganay( Gr. 1) and Prix d’ Ispahan( Gr. 1) and Aventure stepping up her form for straight wins in the Prix Allez France( Gr. 3) and the
Prix Corrida( Gr. 2). Downes is delighted with this year’ s representatives:“ It’ s great to see. We didn’ t get to see Sea The Stars as a four-yearold but we can expect that he would have been very good at four as well. We’ re seeing that with his produce time and time again.” Sea The Stars is entering the next stage of his career as a broodmare sire and has made an exceptional start. In the 2022 crop, he achieved a Group 1 winner with Vertical Blue in the Prix Marcel Boussac( Gr. 1) and achieved two Royal Ascot victories with French Master and Carmers.“ Producing successful broodmares is something you always hoped would happen and is the last piece of the jigsaw for him. In the last two to three years, his daughters have really started to kick on and you can see that he’ s going to be a very influential broodmare sire. To have a daughter of Sea The Stars is something you’ d be very excited to have and we’ re fortunate to have a number of his daughters here.” With talent emerging from both Sea The Stars’ own and second generation crops, it seems likely that the Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe( Gr. 1) trophy will be kept in the family.

This cry, commonly used by cavalry across military history, resonates now more than ever in our minds- because it reflects a stark reality. Sadly, today’ s deadly conflicts( Ukraine, Gaza, Kashmir, Iran) remind us of the fragility of a world where military spending has reached unprecedented levels in human history. For the economy and financial markets, it’ s the trade war that is the real concern, fuelling volatility in stocks and investments. Following the announcement of a potential 50 % tariff on the European Union by the United States starting June 1 st, the CAC 40 quickly dropped before rebounding, as Ursula von der Leyen managed to convey a message of calm. It is clear that the European Union shows a surplus of more than 1 % of its GDP with respect to the United States. However, American grievances seem broader- targeting the eurozone itself( its currency), its tax system( VAT), or even the defense expenditures borne by the U. S. within NATO. The American negotiation style proves to be harsh and at times baffling. Like a horse falling af-
