Hamilton Leithauser“ This Side of the Island” Our love affair with The Walkmen dates back to 2008 and the sublime“ In the New Year,” a gem from the album You & Me. But it’ s true that since then, we’ ve been waiting for Hamilton Leithauser, the incredible“ twelve-string vocal cords” of the American rock band, to step into his own spotlight. With“ This Side of the Island,” his solo career finally takes on the weight his talent deserves, after three albums, no less. This time, the crooner persona is out, and the rage, panache, and blazing intensity of his searing voice are back. This nine-track album, perfectly produced, opens strong with“ Fist of Flowers” and holds steady all the way to the flawless“ This Side of the Island.” Bob Dylan wouldn’ t have disowned it, though he could never have reached such lyrical heights. Chills, from the right side of the island.
Les Arts Florissants J. S. Bach – A Life in Music, Vol. 2: The Weimar Years At 23 years old, Johann Sebastian Bach left northern Germany for Weimar( 1708 – 1717). This entire period is captured in the second volume of the series devoted to the famed composer by Les Arts Florissants. In what would later become Goethe’ s city, Bach played the organ, lived more comfortably, discovered Vivaldi, and had six children with his wife and distant cousin, Maria Barbara. It was the era of his famous cantatas, which he composed at the pace of one per month. The influence of Venice can be heard in these 27 pieces, as well as that of Paris, especially in the French overture of Cantata BWV 61. Naturally, this 1 hour and 18-minute baroque odyssey, conducted by Paul Agnew and superbly led by organist Benjamin Alard, concludes with BWV 182-Bach’ s most famous cantata.
