ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SERVING EQUINE WELL-BEING
Founded in 2019 by Victoria de Poumeyrol and Julien Cornouiller, NovoStable is a monitoring tool that, through cameras and artificial intelligence, can detect abnormal horse behavior to prevent potential health issues such as colic or predict foaling.
Victoria, a digital marketing manager, co-founder, and above all, a sport horse owner, explains how the idea of creating a tool that allows owners to always keep an“ eye” on their horses without being physically present came to life.“ I was fortunate to grow up just a few meters away from the stables. Day and night, I could intervene at any moment if something happened, which was very reassuring because I could act quickly. So, I really wanted to find a 24 / 7 monitoring solution that could analyze behavior very precisely and alert me if something happened.” Julien Cornouiller, an IT systems manager and co-founder, elaborates:“ To develop this tool, we created a unique artificial intelligence system, which we named LANA. It operates using self-learning- commonly known as machine learning in AI terminology. The artificial intelligence trains itself by accessing various data, allowing it to improve its performance for a given task. It calculates and analyzes the different behaviors of each horse using high-definition, wide-angle, and night-vision cameras. The camera transmits all the horse’ s data to the cloud via Wi-Fi or the 4G network.
These data are then analyzed by the main algorithm and sent to the mobile application.” The app features a dashboard displaying information for each horse, such as heart rate and movement patterns, and sends various alerts depending on the severity of symptoms. Omer, a doctor in artificial intelligence, is the specialist behind the AI developed by the company.“ The most important thing is that LANA is constantly training and learning. The more time it spends analyzing horses, the better it becomes.”
HOW DOES IT WORK IN PRACTICE?
Thanks to a database fed with images reflecting horse behavior according to their health status, the artificial intelligence can identify behaviors indicating a health problem. Depending on the severity of the identified symptoms, the AI will send a specific alert to the horse owner’ s application. NovoStable is, therefore, a tool that helps predict potential problems to better adjust treatments and gain a real-time, comprehensive view of a horse’ s overall health. A true innovation in the equestrian industry and a small revolution in horse racing- where human intuition often takes precedence over technological innovation- the company’ s participation in the CES in
