GALORAMA. How would you define the DNA of the Nash sales?
Denis Hubert. They are terroir sales. Ninety percent of the horses come from Manche and Calvados, unlike Fences, where horses from across the country are sold. The regional dimension is truly our main specificity compared to other sales.
G. How have they evolved since their creation?
D. H. People who buy at Nash generally make good deals. The horses are selected by a team of breeders. We know what breeding is about, and the horses are sold at market price. That’ s why we have a somewhat specific clientele that returns every year. But the problem is that small breeders are disappearing. Those who were farmers, with two broodmares and cattle, can no longer manage financially because everything is very expensive today. They no longer sell their foals and, for threeyear-olds, it is becoming increasingly complicated. If they are not able to produce and prepare the product, unfortunately, they stop.
G. What share of the international market do your sales represent?
D. H. As the sales always take place during an international competition, about 25 % of the horses are exported.
G. How do you see the future of the Nash sales?
D. H. A bit more challenging, but we are trying to hold our ground and maintain our specific identity. We have a clientele and a brand image. We must not try to change things or resemble others. Fences does a very good job— we admire them— but they have the Grande Semaine and dealers: that’ s another matter. On our side, we organize sales that reflect who we are.
G. Among the horses that passed through the sales, are there any sales or particular stories that left a strong impression on you?
D. H. There are two horses that always truly impressed Alain Hinard( founder of the Nash sales) during the selections: Flipper d ' Elle and Vancouver d ' Auvray. They both went on to have outstanding careers.
