of Percy Woodland, the star steeplechase jockey of the era, who won the Jockey-Club( twice), the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris( twice), and the Grand National of Liverpool( twice)! In fact, Etienne Balsan had gifted Fragilité as a breakup present to Emilienne d’ Alençon, who became a muse of Parisian high society and was courted by the wealthiest owners. Known then as a demi-mondaine, her birth name was Emilienne André, born in a concierge’ s lodge in Montmartre... Yet, Fragilité, the breakup gift from Balsan, became an engagement present when Emilienne turned her affections toward Percy Woodland in 1905- thus gifting him a future winner of the Grande Course de Haies! Later came the fragility of feelings: Emilienne soon left Percy Woodland to seduce his great rival, the equally legendary Alec Carter- himself a twotime Grand Steeple winner- who tragically died on horseback in October 1914, clad in horizon-blue uniform … Gérard de Chevigny

Alexandra Dovgan Concert at the Fondation Louis Vuitton In keeping with this special“ fashion” issue on the eve of the Prix de Diane Longines( Gr. 1), this 17-year-old Russian pianist fits the bill perfectly: the embodiment of the next generation, with a recent concert at the Fondation Louis Vuitton. As the protégée of the legendary Grigory Sokolov, the case is quickly closed: she’ s the prodigy everyone is after. A collector of international prizes and ovations since the age of eleven, this exemplary student of the Moscow school snagged the prestigious Serdang Prize just last year. Her playing is of rare precision and endless refinement. Chopin( here, Barcarolle, op. 60) and Beethoven hold no secrets for her. In this delightful program, she tackles the delicate Sonata No. 2 by Prokofiev with astonishing brilliance.
