IN THE EYE OF

VINETA SAYER

“ I knew how to paint horses before I could read or write.” Vineta Sayer, originally from Latvia, didn’ t know then that horses would change her life. Every evening, at a small wooden table, she would draw horses. A bit later, she noticed an ad in a local newspaper for a school of art and music.” When we arrived at the first one, the music school, the door was closed. So my father and I kept walking and managed to get into the art school. And that’ s how I started learning techniques. I remember being immediately given a large sheet of drawing paper, and I dove into a landscape full of horses.” In the 1990s, Vineta moved to England.“ I no longer wanted to stay in Latvia, and I thought that at least in England, people might be interested in paintings or engravings of horses.” Vineta attended a race at a racetrack.“ It wasn’ t enough for me to love horses, I wanted to learn. I had a lot of work at the time. For instance, I completed a commission for the Newbury racecourse. The suite of Queen Elizabeth II is decorated with my paintings, small black and white pieces.” Then, anticipating Brexit, Vineta felt the need for a change of scenery.“ I’ ve always felt European, and while visiting France, I found a house where I could have my own studio. I didn’ t realize at first that I was living next to Pompadour and the former National Stud Farms.”

ELEGANCE
BACK TO THE ARTICLE
Coco Chanel saw simplicity as the key to elegance; and though elegance is, by nature, purely subjective, nothing embodies it more perfectly than a racehorse, free, at full speed or flying over the jumps. The beauty of the animal, the refinement of the fabrics, the proud bearing paired with such gentleness, the personality, the grace of a galloping stride combined with the muffled rumble of the pack, the colorful dance of silks, the tandem with the jockey, all come together to form one of the most beautiful and aesthetic choreographies. Racing is experienced as a sport of elegance- not only through the nobility of the kingly animal, but also through the legacy it carries, for centuries, across the globe, on racetracks and in the hearts of the greatest designers. Welcome to this June issue, the Classic season, which celebrates elegance in all its most vibrant forms.
