ENGLISH TEXTS racing’ s crown jewel than the race of the King and Queen? And with good reason: five of the last ten Arc winners had previously shone in Ascot’ s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at various ages. The most famous, Enable, won the British Group 1 three times, starting in 2017, the year she also claimed her first Arc at three. Waldgeist, though beaten by John Gosden’ s champion at Ascot, turned the tables three months later at Longchamp as a 5-yearold. Another German runner, Torquator Tasso, did not take the King George route in his 2021 Arc-winning year but did so in 2022, finishing third in both races. Last year, Bluestocking was runner-up at Ascot behind the French colt Goliath before her Arc triumph. This season, another Francis-Henri Graffard trainee, Calandagan, was crowned by Queen Camilla after a brilliant victory at Ascot. But as a gelding, like third-placed Rebel’ s Romance, he is ineligible for the Arc. That leaves Kalpana, who split the two geldings at Ascot, with the heavy responsibility of carrying on the tradition of King Georgeplaced runners excelling in the Arc.
Fillies via the Yorkshire Oaks Enable again leads the way, having won the Yorkshire Oaks in 2017 at three before her first Arc, and again in 2019 before losing her crown at Longchamp. Others have followed in her footsteps, notably Alpinista, who won at York at five before capturing the 2022 Arc. The Yorkshire Oaks also produced another Arc heroine, Ralph Beckett’ s Bluestocking, though she had won there a year prior to her October 2024 triumph. This year, Aidan O’ Brien’ s filly Minnie Hauk was dominant at York. Will she be able to emulate Enable and win the Qatar Prix de l’ Arc de Triomphe at three? We’ ll know in two days.
