ranks and eventually turning professional in 2017.“ Horse racing can give you emotions so intense that everyday life simply can’ t provide them,” says the rider who trained under Paul Nicholls.“ It can knock you down, and thirty minutes later put you back on top. Sometimes, even the smallest race on a Monday afternoon can give you a greater sense of achievement than a win on a major racecourse. Every victory with your horse, and with the whole team behind him at home, brings a slightly different emotion. To win a race, it takes a huge dose of patience, effort, training, and time, just so that the final five minutes on the track can turn into triumph.” And triumphs, Bryony has had many, at the very highest level. On March 14, 2019, at just 23 years old, she became the first female jockey to win a Group 1 at the Cheltenham Festival, riding Frodon.“ If you had told me at 16 that I would choose racing over show jumping in the United States, I would never have believed I’ d be talking to you, a few years later, about victories in the King George, the Ryanair, the Tingle Creek, or the Champion Chase in Ireland … When you take a moment to reflect, it’ s hard to feel proud of yourself, but incredibly easy to feel proud of your horses and all the memories you’ ve made.”
Welcome to France With over 300 career wins, including five at the highest level, Paul Nicholls’ former apprentice felt, in the spring of 2024, that it was time for something new. To live a fresh adventure, to discover a new environment:“ I left England following my philosophy of step by step. I had the chance to write a beautiful chapter of my story, but I needed a new challenge. France had attracted me for a long time. So, without much preparation, at the end of the British NH season, I took the ferry to France. My idea was simple: if I fail here, I’ ll just keep moving forward elsewhere. Horses can take you anywhere. And then, I have the immense privilege of being the retained jockey for Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, and that’ s exactly what excites me: working closely with the horses and their teams to find those tiny margins that can make them better.”
A First Group 3 Victorious just days after arriving in France, with Likata, Bryony Frost didn’ t take long to find her footing, even if she admits she has“ failed so far at learning French, because it really doesn’ t come naturally to me!” What does come naturally to her, however, is winning races:
“ Winning is the reason we go out there, to be the best, the first past the post, and to create incredible memories that last a lifetime.”
Her first Group 3 at Auteuil, on September 18, aboard Good Girl de Faust, is one of those memories:“ With Good Girl, I felt proud. I work closely with Mickaël Seror and his team. I’ ve followed this talented filly from her very first steps and to land our first Group race together is really, really cool!” Cool, cheerful, natural and talented- Bryony Frost will have no trouble making a name for herself on the French racing scene.
