IN THE EYE OF

HÉLOÏSE CUNY
BY HERMANCE CLERON
With her fingers as brushes, Héloïse Cuny explores the quest for movement and brings the horse to life on canvas. It was during her studies in applied arts that Héloïse developed her finger-painting technique. Born of an intellectual approach centered on the bond between horse and rider, this reflection gave rise to a direct practice: plunging the hand into the material and painting as an act of caress, echoing the closeness shared with the animal. To paint with the spontaneity required by this technique, Héloïse must be in contact with her subject and know it by heart. Passionate about horses since childhood and a rider since the age of five, she has a perfect command of their world, which allows her to naturally convey their grace and energy. Drawn to the graphic result, she has made this technique her own; today, it is the hallmark of her work. Finger painting also allows her to explore new fields of expression, such as live artistic performances. For the past three years, she has teamed up with two musicians to create a poetic show combining music and painting. Through backlit panels, she draws horses in shadow play that gradually take shape and evolve before the spectators’ eyes.“ People really like it, I get great feedback, and live painting truly leaves a mark on the audience,” she confides. Her gestures unfold in rhythm with the music, giving rise to an immersive, vibrant performance.

IT IS THE SEASON OF FIRSTS
The first births, breaking the hushed silence in the heart of the night. The discovery of new arrivals at stud, measured in miles travelled along the French and Irish Stallion Trails. The first steps of a new generation of performers, on the tracks of the breakers and pre-trainers, or already alongside their mentors. So many beginnings that quietly herald the return of brighter days. This season of beginnings is also one of transition. That of Jehan Bertran de Balanda, who embarks on a new chapter after bringing his training career to a close, marked by a vibrant tribute in the temple of NH racing and crowned by a final, powerful Group victory. Through his eyes, his achievements and the testimonies of those who have accompanied him, it is half a century of racing— on the flat and over jumps— that unfolds. A story of firsts, transmission and emotion.
