ITINERARY

DAY 1 • Begin journey to Jakarta, Indonesia
Due to different air carriers and varied flight schedules, some travelers will fly from their home city to a domestic gateway city later today. If you are already located in a gateway city, you will likely depart directly from there early in the morning on Day 2.

DAY 2 • Depart U.S.
Early this morning, you’ll fly from your domestic gateway city to Jakarta, Indonesia.

DAY 3 • Arrive in Jakarta
Arrive in Jakarta on Java, Indonesia. Check into your hotel where you’ll meet the travelers who took our Borneo’s Rain Forests & Orangutans pretrip extension.

DAY 4 • Jakarta • Cooking demonstration in local home
Today, explore Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. First, visit the home of a local family for a lesson in Indonesian cooking. We’ll have the opportunity to help prepare dishes such as lontong opor ayam (Indonesian chicken curry).

DAY 5 • Jakarta • Visit Luar Batang Muslim community • Controversial Topic: The criminalization of extramarital sex and cohabitation
Discover Luar Batang, a predominantly Muslim community and one of the oldest neighborhoods in Jakarta. Here, we’ll talk about the Controversial Topic of Indonesia’s recent decision to criminalize sex and cohabitation outside of marriage. Later, we’ll take a ride on a bajai (three-wheeled scooter).

DAY 6 • Yogyakarta • Home-Hosted Dinner
Depart this morning for our flight to Yogyakarta. After enjoying an afternoon to settle in, we’ll be welcomed into the home of a local family for a Home-Hosted Dinner.

DAY 7 • Borobudur Temple • Optional Yogyakarta street food adventure
Visit the colossal Borobudur Temple, which UNESCO calls “one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.” After, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to the hotel for some independent discoveries. Later, you can join an optional motorbike tour of the city to see Yogyakarta’s landmarks and sample street food.

DAY 8 • Yogyakarta • A Day in the Life of Berbah village
Witness rural Javanese life during our A Day in the Life of a village in Indonesia’s Berbah region. First, visit a local market, then continue on to the village by odong-odong (a local bus). Upon arrival, we’ll be greeted by the village chief before visiting the community’s residents, helping out with farming, cooking, and other daily tasks, and enjoying a meal together.

On Day 8, spend A Day in the Life of a Berbah farming village in rural Java.

DAY 9 • Prambanan Temple • Visit Sekar Rinonce Batik Foundation
Visit the ninth-century Prambanan Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Later, drive to the Sekar Rinonce Batik Foundation which was established to help preserve the traditional “hand-waxed” batik craft.

DAY 10 • Denpasar, Bali • Ubud • GCF visit: Sudirawan Children’s Dance School
Rise early for our flight to Bali. Upon arrival, we’ll drive to Ubud. Then this afternoon we’ll visit a Grand Circle Foundation site, the Sudirawan Children’s Dance School, which was established to preserve the art of Balinese dance for future generations.

DAY 11 • Visit “happy yoga” master • Controversial Topic: The Balinese caste system
Meet a spiritual practitioner and a “happy yoga” instructor today. Later on, engage in a discussion about the Controversial Topic of the Balinese caste system with a mixed caste couple in Batuyang village.

DAY 12 • Boat ride to Trunyan Village • Meet with an animist spiritual leader
Cross Lake Batur by motorboat today and arrive at Trunyan village. Explore the village, then take a boat to a local cemetery to see Trunyan’s unique tradition of displaying their dead in open graves. While here, we’ll meet with a local religious leader to learn about the village’s animist beliefs.

DAY 13 • Visit master mask maker • Candidasa
Transfer to seaside Candidasa today. Along the way, we’ll visit the home of a local mask maker.

DAY 14 • Candidasa • Meet local blacksmith • Visit Balinese villages & salak palm orchard • Explore Tirta Gangga
Visit the villages along Mount Agung, starting with a visit to a Balinese blacksmith and learn about the metalworks he produces, such as keris, or ceremonial daggers. After, head to Sidemen, a mountain village where weavers make ikat textiles. Then, visit a salak palm orchard. Continue to Tirta Gangga, a former summer residence of the Karang Asem royal family.

DAY 15 • Sanur • Meet salt miners in Kusamba • Purification ceremony at Sudamala Temple
Depart for Kusamba, where we’ll visit the home of local salt miners. Then, drive to the Sudamala Purification Temple where a Hindu priest will conduct a purification ceremony using water from the temple’s holy spring. Afterwards, continue our journey to Sanur.

ADVENTURE HIGHLIGHT

On Day 15, participate in a traditional spiritual ceremony with the natural spring waters at Sudamala Temple.

DAY 16 • Explore Uluwatu Cliffside Temple
Ride southwest to Pura Luhur Uluwatu, or Temple above the Headstone. With origins that date back to the tenth century, this Balinese sea temple is perched on a cliff 330 feet above the water.

DAY 17 • Return to U.S.
Transfer to the airport to begin our journey back to the U.S. today. Or, fly from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo to begin your post-trip extension to Komodo Island & Beyond: Land of Dragons.
