October Yearling Sale consistently attracts the largest share of the best European yearlings to come to market each year, and Books 1 and 2 have seen a remarkable 189 yearlings realise 300,000 guineas or more, 77 % of the yearlings to realise that figure at public auction in Europe this year. Tribute must be paid to the breeders and consignors from Britain, Ireland and further afield who entrust their best yearlings to Tattersalls, safe in the knowledge that the global racecourse success of those yearlings continues to attract the world’ s leading buyers year after year.“ We have welcomed large numbers of international visitors to Newmarket throughout Books 1 to 3 with significant numbers of American purchasers joined by buyers from throughout the Gulf region including Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. They have been joined by purchasers from Australia, China, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan and Spain alongside a strong domestic buying bench.
ARQANA OCTOBER YEARLING SALE – 21 / 22 / 23 / 24 / 25 OCTOBER With a new format to include the introduction of Part 1.2 on the second day, the Arqana Yearling Sale suffered statistically. Despite only four less Lots sold in 2025 compared to 2024, the turnover was down approximately three million euros with the top-lot price dropping from 500,000 euros to 450,000 euros. The median was also down – 23,000 euros compared to 28,500 euros in 2025 – and the average saw a small decrease. Stallion Night Of Thunder continued to enjoy a strong sales season with a colt out of Black Type performer Katara achieving the highest price at 450,000 euros. He sold to Sumbe, with representative Mario Gussago saying:“ He’ s the one we really loved and wanted today. He’ s been very well prepped and is perfect physically and walks very well. He’ s a son of Night Of Thunder from a good family, and is a good stallion prospect for the future.” Wootton Bassett’ s recent passing has caused a renewed interest in his yearlings and Coolmore continued their buying spend to purchase a colt out of Listed winner Shamtee. He hails from a beautiful Darley pedigree, from the same family as Territories, Helen Street and Street Cry.“ He’ s a lovely colt, that looks a lot like his sire,” said Nicolas de Watrigant, who signed the docket on behalf of Coolmore.“ We hope he’ ll be worthy representative of his sire.” Following the sale, Olivier Delloye, President of AR- QANA, and Freddy Powell, CEO, commented:“ The results of this October Sale, although showing a decline, demonstrate the true resilience of the yearling market in an environment that is less buoyant than last year. The total turnover once again exceeded € 26 million, the level reached two years ago; while the average of € 42,333 and the median of € 23,000, although down on 2024, remained at levels very comparable to previous years.“ Major players from the August Sale were once again present in October: Sumbe, Coolmore, Al Shira’ aa Racing and Godolphin secured the four top prices during the first part of the sale. France, Spain, Germany, Australia, Ireland, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia also featured prominently among the buyers.”

BY ÉMILIE YVART, DIRECTOR OF EQUICER
The term off-site breeder refers to enthusiasts who raise horses without operating any land themselves, entrusting their broodmares and daily management to a professional. Some may entrust the management of their broodmares to a professional, with breeding decisions made by that professional. For those who are not involved, any income received is tax-exempt- the activity is not taxed. However, in the case of horse sales, any capital gains must be declared. Professional or not, an essential distinction: The tax authorities distinguish between two situations: non-professional participant and professional participant. Professional status depends on two cumulative criteria:
• A regular and ongoing activity, meaning the breeder personally chooses the stud farm, the broodmares to purchase, the matings, and the buying or selling operations;
• A profit-driven activity, meaning the breeder manages the
