HORSE KINGLAND, THE LOVE STORY BETWEEN BERNIE & THIERRY CYPRÈS

A year ago, Kingland achieved his greatest victory in the Prix Renaud du Vivier( Gr. 1) at Auteuil. That day, Bernadette Cyprès, affectionately nicknamed Bernie, was there beside her champion, the one she had admired since he was a foal. It was also her last appearance at Auteuil before illness tragically took her life in September last year. Her husband Thierry, breeder of Kingland, remembers.
“ The day we got married in 1994, we became a team. She was an extraordinary woman, my security, the key to every decision we made. The years ahead will be difficult,” confides Thierry Cyprès. Especially since Bernie was there at every crucial moment, starting with the foalings.“ We were always together for each foaling. She was the one who first helped the foal to nurse. I remember Kingland well. She always told me he had something special. He stood out even as a foal. Among the eleven Group 1 wins from our breeding operation, his victory in November 2024 in the Grande Course de Haies des 4 ans impressed me the most.” It was a triumph for the colt and his whole team, trainer François Nicolle, jockey Kévin Nabet, and co-owners alongside Thierry Cyprès: Écurie Lynne Maclennan, Paul-Étienne Carrillon, and Renaud Lavillenie.
