ENGLISH TEXTS
Jung Kook is one of the members of the Korean boy band BTS, whose instrumental version is put to good use in a Coolmore promo clip. Newly retired Rachael Blackmore gets her own dedicated anthem. Then come the heroic trailers of the Grand Steeplechase, the Jockey Club, and the Diane, followed by the classy Royal Ascot“ LookBook.” Gimme the good stuff was the summer hit in Deauville, and Free the one for the Irish Champion Stakes. The presence of Al Green and the B-52’ s refers to the one time Churchill Downs turned into a festival, during the 2010 HullabaLou. As for ABBA, the Queen was fond of them. Sorry— we couldn’ t find a less obvious nod to the Queen Elizabeth II.
Rosalía:“ Lux” You can blame her for being a bit grandiose and for an exacerbated evangelism, but not for being behind her time. With the deeply inhabited Lux, the Catalan pop star makes a 180-degree turn and a simultaneous comeback to grace. The brilliance of this fourth album lies in giving a central role to the London Symphony Orchestra, famous for having contributed to the legendary Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’ s, the Star Wars and Harry Potter soundtracks, and even Les Lacs du Connemara. Its strings strike right at the epicenter of this cornerstone: Bergain, the exhilarating baroque track shared with Queen Björk and US producer Yves Tumour. From the opening anthem to the unsettling Porcelana, all the way to the lovely closing choirs, it’ s a flamboyant marriage of flamenco, pop, and opera. Crossed by a dozen languages, this fourth opus already bathes— much like its Sauvignon blanc— in a golden future.
Playlist:“ It’ s Already Christmas” This best-of issue couldn’ t wrap up without a Merry Christmas playlist, to be consumed however you like: bottoms-up or piano piano, in Advent-calendar mode. Between the inevitable Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, we couldn’ t bring ourselves to exclude the unavoidable Last Christmas, but we did find it useful to leave Mariah Carey and Tino Rossi in the stalls in order to make room for a few gems— perhaps less popular, but also less overdone. A selection with a mostly English-speaking flavor, opening with equine vocalises to the sound of The Ronettes. Retro and rather jazzy foundations, before giving way to the new queens of pop, then to a French interlude ranging from Aznavour to Pomme, followed by a garland of stars and a“ so British” finale featuring England’ s breakout artist of 2025( Olivia Dean) and the iconic Love Actually soundtrack. It’ s on the house!
