TATTERSALLS CHELTENHAM APRIL SALE – 16 APRIL Racing may have not taken place during April at Cheltenham due to a problem with drainage, but the traditional Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sale continued with new records achieved. Top lot Mifa D’ Airy, a daughter of Masked Marvel, became the highest priced filly to sell at Tattersalls Cheltenham and also set a new record for the April Sale, achieving £ 435,000. Bought by trainer Dan Skelton and agent Ryan Mahon, she was an easy winner at the Dromahane point-to-point and has been purchased for existing owner Rachel Wilson. Skelton said:“ Mifa D’ Airy is beautiful, she looked supreme in her race, incredible, almost too good to be true, and her physical matches up, she is an absolute rocket.“ Rachel is a phenomenal supporter; she was the backbone of this and is the owner at the moment, but we are putting an ownership team together.”
OBS BREEDERS SALE OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS IN TRAINING – 10-17 APRIL The OBS sale saw an extraordinary moment in bloodstock history as a son of Flightline achieved $ 10.5 million after an incredible build-up. Hopes were high that the colt would make a record-breaking amount following his impressive breeze, yet the previous high of $ 3 million was easily shattered. He sold to agent Donato Lanni on behalf of Zedan Racing, who said:“ There was a lot of hype on this horse. He followed through with the hype. When he worked, everyone got on that rail and watched and he delivered. He did everything that was asked of him.( Hall of Fame trainer) Bob( Baffert) loved him, the first time he saw him he loved him and Amr( Zedan) is tough, he’ s tough to outbid. He’ s an emotional guy and he’ s great for the sport. His enthusiasm is unbelievable.” The record-breaking colt will go into training with Bob Baffert and has been named Zedan. OBS President Tom Venturaadded,“ The best description of this horse is LeBron James coming out of high school. He was just that much heads above the class. Let’ s hope he keeps that and it translates on the racetrack. His imposing physical is one thing. The way he did it on the track was effortless. But the class was in the ring. It was hectic, they followed him. But when he came in the ring and there was a lot of chatter going on, he was just all class.”
GOFFS UK TWO-YEAR- OLD BREEZE UP SALE – 23 APRIL Tally-Ho Stud enjoyed an excellent Goffs Breeze Up Sale, consigning the top two Lots – a colt by Mehmas and a colt by Ten Sovereigns. The Mehmas colt, a halfbrother to a Listed winner, realised £ 880,000 and was knocked down to bloodstock agent Anthony Stroud.“ He did a very good breeze, he has a good pedigree and he looks like a Royal Ascot two-year-old,” reported Stroud.“ We’ re all trying to buy them to run at Ascot and he fits that brief. Tally-Ho do a fantastic job. He just had the make and shape of what we’ re looking for in a breezer.“ Obviously it’ s a great deal of money, a lot more than one would’ ve liked to have spent, but that’ s the competition of the sales ring. Everyone wants to win so you have to stretch. I don’ t know who’ ll train him yet, we just need to come up for some air and I’ ll be told where he goes later.” Roger O’ Callaghan of Tally-Ho Stud said:“ First I have to pay tribute to Con, Amy and Olivia [ Marnane ], as they bred him. The team at Tally-Ho put a lot of hard work into results like this too. I’ d say we have some of the best riders in the country at Tally-Ho.“ This colt always stood out and you just get a hunch, just a feeling, about horses like that. He delivered what we expected him to in the breeze and in the shows, and that always makes it easier to sell. It was some bidding battle, very cool.“ We want to be good at the job, and want to be perceived to be good at the job, so when horses sell well
