almost exactly one year after Arapaho’ s success in the Tancred Stakes in Australia. It is also worth noting that the four-year-old colt faced Aomori City in this American Group 1, also bred by Écurie Peregrine, in partnership with Haras de Saint-Pair( we will return to this later; the horse finished sixth). Foaled in 2022, Zulu Kingdom became, two years later, the fourth runner from André Fabre’ s two-year-old squad to debut. At Saint-Cloud that day in June, the son of Ten Sovereigns outclassed his ten rivals, all making their debuts. Such a performance naturally attracted strong interest. The horse was sold to the United States and has since raced in the colours of Madaket and partners. Still at two, the colt made a name for himself on the American turf circuit. After Group 3 and Group 2 victories, he took his chance in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf( Gr. 1), though without success. At three, he returned even stronger and captured his first Group 1 in the American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs, on Kentucky Derby day. Almost always partnered with leading French jockey Flavien Prat, Zulu Kingdom is trained by the equally formidable Chad Brown. Last April, despite a long absence, he provided his trainer with his 3,000 th career victory in the Maker’ s Mark Mile. This victory also highlights the quality of Elisabeth Fabre’ s breeding operation. With only a small number of broodmares, Haras de
Saint-Laurent in Sées( Orne) has regularly produced black-type performers in recent years. Among them are Group 1 winner Arapaho, and Group winners Soleil Marin, Montclair, Athabascan, Timour, Joyful Trinity, Aomori City, Bouttemont, Zanzibari, as well as Brigantin, bred in partnership with Team Valor and Denali Stud. For completeness, the aforementioned Zanzibari is the uncle of Zulu Kingdom( clearly a highly successful family). This Prix de Cabourg( Gr. 3) winner was a very useful stallion at Haras des Sablonnets. He is himself a son of the outstanding Zinziberine, purchased in the United States by the Fabres, and winner at two of the Critérium de Maisons- Laffitte( Gr. 2) and the Prix Eclipse( Gr. 3). Zulu Kingdom’ s dam, by Smart Strike, was not covered in 2025, having foaled late a filly by Sottsass.

British jockeys coming over to France is nothing new. Dean Gallagher did it along with Phillip Carberry in the early 2000s. Followed swiftly but champion jockeys James Revely and Felix de Giles. Don’ t forget the girls either with multiple champion female jockey Charlotte Prichard coming from the Welsh hills making
Royan her home and more recently Bryony frost made the big transfer across the channel.
I actually went to the British racing school with Josh on our four-week course before we went to work for our respective trainers, and I could see then this lad had talent. It’ s not really a surprise when you look at his bloodline though. Both his parents were successful amateur jockeys, and his uncle is Peter Bowen a long-standing servant of the training ranks in Wales. This also means that Peters sons James and Sean Bowen are Josh’ s cousins meaning he had competitive time growing up especially when it came to pony racing.
Having arrived in France on the 1 st of February he joined the training giant of Macaire and Lageneste in Royan having worked a month for them last summer and with the help of his agent Dylan Bissout he’ s already had 12 rides resulting in one winner for Davide Satalia at Strasbourg and 8 places. A few months into his new start I thought it would be best to give him a call and see how he was finding things.
G. Tell our French audience abit about your background in to racing.
