FOCUSED

ON FIBER

Pattie Walker, Segra
When it comes to providing commercial fiber solutions, every mile counts. That’ s why Cox Communications has been busy acquiring fiber miles in markets across the U. S.
Cox Communications is advancing its future growth through Cox Mobile, Segra and RapidScale. We’ ve invested more than $ 12 billion in network upgrades over the past decade and, more recently, added fiber miles to our coverage.
We acquired Segra in 2021— one of the most significant investments in Cox Communications’ history. As one of the largest privately held fiberoptic infrastructure providers in the U. S., Segra added state-of-the-art voice and data technology solutions to our portfolio, covering nine states throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.
In 2023 we acquired Unite Private Networks( UPN), after being the majority owner of the company( in partnership with Ridgemont Equity Partners and the UPN management team) since 2016. Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, UPN brought its own advanced commercial fiber-optic solutions, which serve more than 300 Midwest communities across 21 states. Shortly after the acquisition, we integrated UPN into Segra and officially merged them in late 2024. This now operates as a standalone fiber company, and we’ re working to strengthen its infrastructure investments and capabilities in the business services market.
“ Joining UPN and Segra into its own entity dramatically increases our ability to provide the fastest, most reliable service over a significantly larger fiber infrastructure,” said Kevin Anderson, Segra’ s president and strategic advisor.“ It’ s about expanding our markets, enhancing our coverage, adding new customers and leveraging new opportunities.”
ACCELERATING GROWTH Segra’ s opportunities lie in accelerating growth in commercial fiber solutions and building midmarket momentum, which is why the company acquired Everstream’ s commercial fiber assets in St. Louis in 2024. This acquisition added another 1,000 route miles and linked Segra’ s Southeast and Midwest networks, providing greater capacity and fiber connectivity.
