Another season and another new element of the Official Programme to give us yet more insight into what makes the top riders tick. At each round, we are asking some of them what the whole WorldSBK scene means to them. This time around, we have two home-grown Italian stars.

Un’ altra stagione e un altro nuovo argomento per il Programma Ufficiale, per farci entrare ancora meglio nella mentalità dei piloti di punta. Ad ogni round chiediamo ad alcuni di loro quale significato abbia la scena del WorldSBK. Questa volta, abbiamo due stelle italiane, cresciute in casa.

When‘ Petrux’ finally hangs up his leathers he will be able to look back on a career full of not just major achievements but a variety of cross-discipline victories that few riders in the modern era will ever approach.
And it all started for him in the STK600 and STK1000 classes right here in WorldSBK.
He has won races in not just different racing classes, but even scored a stage win at the Dakar Rally raid not so long ago.
And all the while- even after a horror off-road training crash and a remarkable recovery last year- Petrucci is always himself. Smiling, mischievous, larger than life, passionate and endlessly, joyously human.
He suits WorldSBK perfectly. So, what does WorldSBK mean to him?
“ It means racing to me when I was young,” said Danilo.“ When it started its‘ golden era’ in the mid-1990s, I was following WorldSBK. For sure, I remember so well the fights between Fogarty, Slight, and all those guys.”
The greater WorldSBK paddock was the obvious route for Petrucci to take to find global success.“ It was, for me, a compulsory step inside the WorldSBK paddock. From Superstock I went to MotoGP™. WorldSBK has been a necessary path for my career. In fact, when I quit MotoGP™, I said,‘ I don’ t want to race anymore,’ but then I tried to race in WorldSBK because I said I cannot quit racing without a season in WorldSBK. After the first podium in Donington Park it was the best choice to come back from MotoAmerica and then Rally racing to be in WorldSBK.”
WorldSBK, even on a good Ducati, is a tough category, but it is a more straightforward one than some he has been in.“ It is really challenging- a good mix between sport, racing and the riders. It is human. I think I decided to come into WorldSBK in the right moment. There is really less pressure, fewer eyes are watching you, and you are more relaxed. It is more normal.”
Quando“ Petrux” appenderà definitivamente la tuta al chiodo, potrà ripensare ad una carriera costellata non solo di grandi successi, ma anche di una varietà di vittorie in molte e diverse discipline, che pochi piloti dell’ era moderna potranno mai eguagliare.
E tutto è iniziato per lui nelle classi STK600 e STK1000 proprio qui nel WorldSBK.
Ha vinto gare non solo in diverse categorie, ma ha persino ottenuto una vittoria di tappa al Rally Dakar non molto tempo fa. Nonostante lo scorso anno abbia subito anche un terribile incidente in allenamento in fuoristrada, ed un conseguente straordinario recupero, Petrucci è sempre sé stesso. Sorridente, malizioso, esuberante, passionale e infinitamente, gioiosamente umano.
Si adatta perfettamente al WorldSBK. Quindi, cosa significa per lui il WorldSBK?
“ Quando ero giovane per me significava correre” ha detto Danilo.“ Quando sono iniziati gli“ anni d’ oro” a metà degli anni‘ 90, seguivo il WorldSBK. Ricordo benissimo le lotte tra Fogarty, Slight e tutti quegli altri ragazzi”.
Il paddock del WorldSBK era la strada più ovvia da percorrere per Petrucci per raggiungere il successo globale.“ Per me è stato un passaggio obbligato all’ interno del paddock del mondiale delle derivate dalla serie. Dalla Superstock sono passato alla MotoGP™. Il WorldSBK è stato un percorso necessario per la mia carriera. Infatti, quando ho lasciato la MotoGP™, mi sono detto:“ Non voglio più correre”, ma poi ho provato a gareggiare nel WorldSBK perché ho pensato che non potevo smettere senza aver prima disputato almeno una stagione in Superbike. Dopo il primo podio a Donington Park, di ritorno dal MotoAmerica e poi dai Rally, ha avuto la conferma di come correre nel WorldSBK fosse stata la scelta migliore”.
Il mondiale Superbike, anche con una buona Ducati, è una categoria difficile, ma più semplice di altre in cui ha corso.“ È davvero impegnativa: un buon mix tra sport, gare e piloti. È un ambiente umano. Credo di aver deciso di entrare nel WorldSBK al momento giusto. C’ è davvero meno pressione, meno occhi puntati addosso e sei più rilassato. È più normale.”
