At Dusk
Thursday evening. This summer day a few minutes shorter than yesterday. On the back deck, a book of essays open on my lap. More than half-way through even a long human life, sitting with a dog more than halfway through hers. A red-eyed vireo, a bird I’ ve never seen, tosses its song onto the evening air, a series of brief whistles, vignettes of birdsong, altered slightly and repeated again. I close my eyes and let the song take me, imagine the tops of trees and the endlessness of blue sky. Slightly softer, distant, comes the answer of a second bird: I am here too! I am here!
