KEYNOTE SPEAKER

JON DORENBOS

Life Is Magic: Leadership, Resilience, And Mindset

From the NFL field to the America’ s Got Talent stage, Jon Dorenbos has built a career rooted in precision, perseverance, and purpose. A super bowl champion long snapper turned world class magician and motivational speaker, Jon’ s story is one of overcoming adversity, embracing change, and choosing mindset over circumstance. As he prepares to keynote for our multifamily community, we asked him to share lessons from his journey that resonate far beyond sports and directly into leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.
WHAT IS ONE LESSON FROM YOUR JOURNEY THAT YOU BELIEVE IS MOST RELEVANT FOR TODAY’ S MULTIFAMILY LEADERS?
Life doesn’ t happen to you. It happens for you. That doesn’ t mean it’ s easy. It means there’ s purpose in it. Every challenge you face, a tough resident, a budget cut, a staffing shortage, is an opportunity to grow your leadership. The question isn’ t“ Why is this happening?” It’ s“ What is this teaching me?”
LOOKING BACK, HOW DID YOUR EXPERIENCES IN THE NFL SHAPE YOUR MINDSET AROUND PRESSURE, PERFORMANCE AND TEAMWORK?
In the NFL, pressure isn’ t optional. It’ s part of the job description. As a long snapper, I had one job. Do it perfectly. Under pressure. Every time. I learned that pressure is a privilege. It means people are counting on you. And when people are counting on you, you prepare differently. You show up differently.
AS A LONG SNAPPER, A ROLE THAT REQUIRES PRECISION AND CONSISTENCY, WHAT LEADERSHIP OR PERFORMANCE LESSONS FROM THAT POSITION APPLY TO LEASING TEAMS AND MAINTENANCE CREWS?
Consistency beats hype. Nobody cheers for the long snapper until he messes up. Leasing teams and maintenance crews are the same. When you do your job right, it feels seamless. Excellence is about mastering the fundamentals so consistently that people trust you without hesitation.
WHAT’ S ONE LESSON YOU LEARNED ABOUT RESILIENCE DURING YOUR NFL CAREER THAT YOU USE ALMOST DAILY NOW?
You are stronger than your worst moment. I’ ve been cut from teams. I’ ve had heart surgery.
I’ ve faced personal loss. Every time I thought,“ This might break me.” It didn’ t. That reminder gives me confidence every single day.
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH SETBACKS, WHETHER PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL, AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE FACING BURNOUT IN MULTIFAMILY?
When I feel overwhelmed, I simplify. What’ s the next right step? Not the next ten. Just one. Burnout often comes from trying to carry tomorrow’ s weight today. Focus on controllables. And take care of your energy. Sleep, gratitude, connection.
ONE THEME IN YOUR KEYNOTE IS MINDSET. HOW DO YOU COACH ORGANIZATIONS TO SHIFT FROM REACTING TO STRESS, TO LEADING THROUGH IT?
Stress is neutral. It’ s just energy. The difference between panic and performance is mindset. I teach teams to pause, breathe, and ask,“ How do we win this moment?” When you focus on winning the moment, stress becomes fuel.
