How Did You First Get Started In Property Management?
While in college, I was offered a maintenance technician position at the brand-new apartment community I had just moved into. The significant rent discount made it an easy decision. Within a few months, I was promoted to supervisor, and as I saw the long-term potential of a career in property management, I chose to step away from school full-time and
pursue the industry full-time.
Who Has Been A Mentor Or Major Influence In Your Career— And What Did You Learn From Them?
I’ ve been fortunate to work with and learn from many great people throughout my career, making it difficult to point to just one mentor. Each property, company, and role introduced me to leaders, technicians, managers, and peers whose different styles influenced me along the way. Together, they taught me that leadership isn’ t a title, but the consistency and accountability of showing up for your team and
residents every day.
How Has This Career Shaped You As A Person, Beyond Just Your Professional Life?
This career has taught me to stay calm, patient, and accountable in ways that extend well beyond the workplace. Supporting more than 1,000 residents through stressful and unexpected situations has built character and perspective that carry into my personal life. It’ s reinforced that real impact comes from being reliable, adaptable, and steady when others need you most. I take great pride in contributing to my residents’ quality of life,
and in doing so, it adds meaning to my own.
What’ s One Misconception People Often Have About Property Management That You’ d Like To Clear Up?
A common misconception is that the role is purely technical. While the technical side matters, a big part of the job is empathy, communication, and helping residents navigate unexpected challenges. You’ re not just managing a property, you’ re helping maintain a community and the sense of
stability that comes with it.
If You Could Go Back, What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self When You Were First Starting Out?
If I could go back, I would tell myself what a beautiful high rise we are currently working at. I would show myself how much money we are making. I would tell myself to take a deep breath and that every step along the way is necessary. I would tell myself that I made the right decision when I chose this career over student debt. I would encourage myself to get more involved with AAMD and the rest of the industry sooner than I did.
