He did not restrict himself to successful trade business but was also engaged in banking industry thus becoming the first Armenian trader in the banking field . First , he bought most of the shares of the Tiflis Commercial Bank , becoming its principal shareholder and then the Chairman of the Board of Directors . The branches of the Bank were opened in Baku and Batumi . Mantashyants also acquired the shares of the two other major Russian banks . In the 1880s , a real oil storm began in Baku . Many Armenian entrepreneurs settled there and started to operate new oil wells . The reason Alexander Mantashyants arrived in Baku was his old friend Mikael Aramyants . Aramyants , together with three Artsakh residents ( A . Tsaturyan , G . Tumayan , and G . Arapelyan ), founded the " Balakhan Society " and was engaged in oil mining . He bought new oil wells , but there were serious difficulties with the transportation of oil . It was necessary to build their own oil pipeline , as getting oil through the Ghukasyan brothers ’ pipeline was expensive . Aramyants initiated the raise of funds worth of 150 thousand rubles . He went to Tiflis , met his old friend Mantashyants , and encouraged him to become one of the shareholders buying the shares worth of 40 thousand rubles . Mantashyants agreed and became the fifth partner . Each of them invested 40 thousand rubles and with 200 thousand constituent capital , they founded “ Tsaturyan , Arapelyan & Co .” oil-producing and trading company . Assessing Baku oil prospects correctly , he bought the shares of the three Artsakh residents , thus sharing ownership with Mikael Aramyants only and establishing ‘’ A . I . Mantashev and Co .’’ trading house with a capital of one million rubles - 25 % of the shares belonging to Aramyants , and 75 % to Mantashyants , respectively . With founding capital of 22 million rubles , the Company was the largest in all of Russia . The company expanded and had leading positions for 10 years . He called on all Armenian oil producers to unite their efforts to stand against the Nobels and Rotschilds as the main competitors of the industry , although he had good relationships with them on a personal level .
Soon Mantashyants trading houses and their branches spread all over the world . He also owned mines , factories , estates , houses , hotels , cottages and steamships . With his successful business and charitable activities , he became one of the most famous and influential figures of the time . He was the first-guild merchant , a member of the Tiflis instance of the Royal Palace , the founder and honorary member of the Armenian Benevolent Society of the Caucasus , a real state councilor , a Deputy of the Tiflis City Duma , an honorary citizen of Tiflis . Alexander Mantashyants was awarded the Order of St . Anna III Degree and the French Legion of Honor . The man who reached these heights , how-
