The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located at Syntagma Square in Athens , just in front of the Hellenic Parliament . It is a memorial constructed from 1926 to 1932 to commemorate the unknown victims of the recent wars . The initiative of its fashion was from the army minister Theodore Pampalos and it got designed by the Architect Emmanuel Lazaridis . The construction ended in 1932 and it got inaugurated on 25th March 1923 , the day of celebration for the Greek War of Independence in 1821 .

The memorial consists of a wall-like background with a statue on it and a cenotaph in front . Two big stairs are built in some distance right and left of it , connecting the memorial with the outside of the Parliament . The wall is created form big parts of sculptured porolith combined together . The statue is located in the middle of the wall and shows a bare , dead soldier lying down . The soldier holds with his left hand a circular shield , wears an ancient helmet and has his head turned against the wall . The helmet is thought to suggest the magnificent history of the several Ancient Greek city-states , which had advanced armies . On the porolith wall right and left from the statue have been sculptured phrases from Thucydides ’ historical manuscripts to also point to the Ancient Greek History . More down on the wall and on the stairs right and left are written names of places where battles from mainly the Balkan Wars , the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the two World Wars took place . While the 2nd Ward War occurred after the construction of the memorial , it got updated to also have the battles of it written on the porolith wall . The reference to the battles from the Modern Greek History combined with the evidence form the Ancient Greek History infer that the soldiers from the recent wars were brave and deserving , just like their ancient counterparts . Since the day the memorial was inaugurated , a candle in front of the memorial is kept on and members of the Presidential Guard protect it all day round as a way to pay tribute to the unknown victims of the wars .
