The White Tower of Thessaloniki
The White Tower is the most commonly known monument of
Thessaloniki and the symbol of the city, because of its
prominent location, long history and impressive architecture.
This monument is rather old, as it was built in 15 th century in
order to replace an older one, which was part of the 12 th
century Byzantine fortification. Later, it was reconstructed by
the Ottomans. It was used as a fort enhancing the harbor’s
defense, as a garrison and a prison.
This monument is also very interesting, and visitors will have
the chance to experience a wonderful ride back in time from
the day the city was born 23 centuries ago, up to its recent
past. Once you take the flight of stairs all the way to the top of
the White Tower, you can enjoy a stunning view of the whole
city, and feel the spirit of all the different cultures that have
shaped the identity of the city of Thessaloniki.
