Spotlight Dr . and Mrs . Harman
A Lifetime Journey of Service Together
Dr . Bruce ( B . J .) and Mrs . Jackie Harman will be celebrating 44 years of marriage this year . Mrs . Harman began her career going to school at Miami Dade Junior College and then went on to be a buyer for two major retail corporations where she met and fell in love with Dr . Harman , Life University ( Life U ) Professor in Chiropractic Sciences . Their story is a sweet one with many twists and turns along the way .
Dr . Harman was a history major with a minor in economics and graduated in 1974 , the year Life U was founded . From there , he went into retail and finished half of his MBA at St . John ’ s University in New York City . Soon after , Dr . Harman received his first two chiropractic adjustments , which changed everything .
Suffering from bad headaches and acid reflux for many years , Dr . Harman always had plenty of aspirin and antacids on hand . Like many , he was raised in a traditional medical background , with one major exception , there was a chiropractor in his neighborhood who came door to door with his portable adjusting table . For only $ 2 an adjustment , his uncle and aunt received regular adjustments . His uncle did not understand the “ why ,” but he always felt so much better after those adjustments .
Dr . Harman also had a friend who was attending the New York College of Chiropractic ( NYCC ) who introduced him to his first two adjustments . After those adjustments , he no longer needed the aspirin or the antacids . He decided that he too wanted to become a chiropractor and asked his friend about NYCC . Dr . Harman ’ s friend told him that if he were to do it all over again , he would go to Life University in Marietta , Georgia . He didn ’ t have to convince him any further .
Dr . Harman started Life U in January 1978 and graduated in 1980 . During his year between leaving New York City and attending
Life U , Dr . Harman moved in with his parents and worked at Jordan Marsh department store . This is where he met Jackie Harman . He asked her out , but she asked for a raincheck since she was in the process of ending another relationship . They did eventually set up a date , but Dr . Harman stood her up . Mrs . Harman , being her own person , didn ’ t let that get to her and never mentioned anything to Dr . Harman when they saw each other at work . Instead , she was the consummate professional . One day they needed to work together in the warehouse , and Dr . Harman asked her if she was hungry and would like to go for lunch . Mrs . Harman ’ s response was , “ Sure , are you gonna show up this time ?” And they have been together ever since .
Together , Dr . and Mrs . Harman are a driving force in the LIFEforce Tribe and hope to see more LIFEforce members get involved with LIFEforce Weekends ( LFW ) and LIFE Leadership Weekends ( LLW ). To them , “ Lasting Purpose ” is not just a phrase , but their reality . Whenever and wherever they can help prospective and current students , they are there . As a real estate agent , Mrs . Harman helps many students ’ parents purchase homes in the area for their children to live in while they are attending Life U . So , while Dr . Harman is teaching and mentoring these students at the University , Mrs . Harman makes sure that they are living in a safe and happy place .
“ I make sure that whatever I find for them ( home ) is obviously going to be a good environment for them ; it ’ s going to give them an opportunity to grow , to be around other students and that they will have their unit . They make their friends , and it grows from there .”
Dr . Harman also loves hosting three Life U Enrollment Webinars each quarter : two of these webinars are for prospective students , and one is for newly accepted students preparing them for attending Life U . There is usually a Student LIFEforce and staff member
Dr . and Mrs . Harman
on with Dr . Harman so that they can share their stories with these students .
“ I do this because I know the types of questions I would ask if I were a student ,” said Dr . Harman .
Together , the Harmans love working among their tribe in LIFEforce and want to make the world a better place . It is important to them that the chiropractic profession continues to grow and evolve as it changes the world .
“ Seeing the fruits of our labors , seeing our tribe grow , seeing many students getting involved , also being the faculty advisor for Student LIFEforce ( SLF ), having to spend two days every other quarter interviewing over 20 prospective new SLF members , we are making a change , we are making a difference ,” said Dr . Harman .
“ The things that make me feel the best are the ways the students accept us and acknowledge us and look up to us ,” said Mrs . Harman .
They would both like others to know how wonderful LIFEforce is and how much they receive from it . The Harmans believe that they get far more from LIFEforce than they ever give .
Special Note : Dr . & Mrs . Harman received the LIFEforce Will Not Stop Award at the 2022 Lasting Purpose Luncheon During LIFE Vision Extravaganza 2022 .
