Families within public school systems are often presented with limited options to identify their ethnic or cultural heritages. In this article, families refer to themselves as Hispanic or Non-Hispanic because the terms Latino / a and Latinx were not available when they responded to a governing agency. We recognize the colonizing history of the term Hispanic and that discussion surrounding Hispanic, Latino / a, and Latinx continues to evolve. While NAEYC style is to use Latino / a, when we refer to families, we use the term Latinx as a demonstration of inclusivity.
