HELBLING ENGLISH
Memory: Use it, or lose it!
A lot has been said about including skills for life in the language classroom. The notion that teaching the
language is and should be much more than teaching the language is now widely accepted. We have changed
and adapted our teaching by focusing on “content and values” in our English classes. Our classes now include
culture, intercultural skills, CLIL, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills among others. Our intention
has shifted towards helping our learners develop other areas of their life that can be applied to any other
subject, and/or life in general while learning the language.
Research shows that one of the pillars of successful learning as well as social and professional development is
Memory. Having a good memory is very useful in everything we do, and when it fails, it can affect many areas
in life, work, school and family. Surprising facts will teach us how important it is in the learning process of
most subjects, especially languages.
Memory training is something very simple but at the same time vital. Our classes offer plenty of opportunity
to include and implement training in different ways to help students develop their “remembering skills”.
In this presentation we will analyze interesting findings based on research, and identify activities that we find
in any textbook but that could be further exploited in fun ways so as to train our students memory. We will
then look at other alternative engaging tasks and interactions that will help our learners acquire important
skills for learning and at the same time, develop this crucial skill for life.
