About 25,000 women served overseas during World War l. They served as nurses, doctors, secretaries, driivers, and many other roles. There were some women who served overseas, so close to the frontlines that they had gas masks and helmets on the backs of their chairs. What did they do? They transmitted messages from the battlefields A.E.F. unit’s headquarters. These were the hello girls. This headset belonged to the hello girls. They were enlisted during Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Women telephone operators were recruited from all over the US for their ability to speak french and american. Over 230 women served overseas as hello girls. These women received physical training , observed military protocol, wore identity disks and worked very close to the front lines. These women worked very hard and showed incredible bravery, but upon their return to the US at the end of the war, they did not receive any recognition and not veteran bonus. In 1977 the few surviving hello girls finaling received the recognition they discovered.
