WWI - Objects Tell Stories | Page 63

Hello girls

.These women were so close to the frontlines, that they had gas masks and helmets on the back of their chairs,” I slammed the book closed. Why would anyone ever risk their life on the frontlines. I held back tears, trying not think of my aunt virginia. Clearly Mrs. Thomas noticed, because she asked me if I needed to go out into the hall. I imeadly ran out in the hall not even saying thank you. I knew it was rude, but I couldn't hold back the tears. The tears  slowly trickled down my face, I had enough restraint to not burst out into tears. I curled into a ball and thought of the terrors of war. Gun shots. Bombs. The screams. Last words yelled.

Later that day I suffered through the rest of the school day as we learned about the ‘Hello Girls’. They answered calls during wwi. That might sound like an easy job compared to what the soldiers did, but they were so close to the front lines that they had o have gas masks and helmets on the back of their chairs. All the girls in my class were obsessing over how brave they were. The thing is they would never have to be that “brave” if they’re was world peace. “I raise my hand to object.  “I think people lose aspect f the horrors  of war when they think about the bravery. So many people are serving overseas and all people can say is that they are brave. BRAVE!? My aunt virginia, who might not come back. ALL you can say is she’s brave?1” I am yelling now. I’m sobbing. I’m melting.

I wake up the next day trying to remember how everything went down. While I try to refresh my memory, my mom comes in to wake me up for school. “Hey sweetheart. Did you sleep well?” She asks in a gentle voice. I nod, as I am still very tired. “So..Mrs. Thompson  emailed me telling me some of the news you missed yesterday since I checked you out. She said you need to write a one page report on the Hello Girls…” I interrupt her before she can finish. “I don’t want to learn anymore about war! It’s a horrible thing!” I yell so loud I startle myself. “Honey, I know it isn’t easy with your Aunt Virgine gone, but you still have to go to school and participate. This has been the fifth time I had to come to school to calm you down. I mean she’s my sister and I love her so much..” Her voice starting to break....
