I want that perspective . Yeah . So that song just came , my daughter ’ s just a singer and she ’ s always singing and she ’ s always kind of writing songs , but when I say writing songs , it ’ s just her just kind of going off the cuff . And so a lot of times I ’ ll sit down at the piano and just play a progression and she ’ ll sing whatever comes to mind . And that particular thing , we weren ’ t even playing music , she was just out playing in the yard and she started singing this and my wife captured it on video and it was just like a chorus that we would just sing a lot in our house . It was kind of just stuck with me , and it was just her singing it randomly , whatever comes to mind . But because we had kind of a capture of it , it just really dug a deep seed in my heart . I was constantly singing it when I was in the car with her , and we would sing it a lot together . And so I was glad that we could get it on the record and make it a song that other people could be blessed by too .
Yeah , I love that . And I love too , when you say the best , God , at first glance , that seems an almost blasphemous in a way . It feels like , oh , you can ’ t say that . No , he ’ s the only God . But in reality , man , there ’ s so many things in our life that we would put before God and that we look to for comfort or we look to for strength and security and just that little idea that she has of like , “ No , he ’ s better than all those things .”
[ WM ] Yes , absolutely . I ’ ve had five kids , I have seven grandkids , but that ’ s how they would say it . My daughter would say , “ Oh , that ’ s the best candy .” Well , there ’ s a lot of kinds of candies , but I know what she means .
So now , your old friend from Elevation , Jenna Barrientes , joins you on “ Be Near ”. What can you tell us about this song and her participation on the project ?
[ Mack ] Man , “ Be Near ” is honestly one of my favorite songs on the record . And I ’ m a guy that ’ s drawn to the deep cuts on albums . I like the songs that usually aren ’ t going to be pushed to radio . That ’ s one of those songs that I wrote years ago in a writing session , and it ’ s just stuck with me .
