I did that when God says “ no ”, it must be for a pretty good reason . The reason I said that is because I ’ m old and I ’ ve learned that .
[ Mack ] Yeah , well , me and my wife just celebrated 18 years . And so just looking back at that , and it ’ s so funny , you are living life and so every day you ’ re just going through life and sometimes you don ’ t even realize until you take stock and look back at the years and say , “ Wow , this small decision , this small thing , this small prayer led to this which led to this , which led to this .” And you trace all the things back and you can only really do that when you ’ ve been in it for a long time .
[ WM ] Yeah , that ’ s exactly right . It ’ s the difference between opinion and perspective .
[ Mack ] Yes .
[ WM ] Well , the title of your album , This is Holy , is taken from a lyric in your song , “ I Will Exalt
You ”. It ’ s an exceptionally beautiful worship song and it ’ s easily adaptable for congregations to sing . What can you tell us about it ?
[ Mack ] Yeah , I love that song . I wrote that song with two friends , Nick Herbert and Sam Bailey , and I think we actually started that song in the middle of the pandemic when all songwriting sessions were on Zoom . They live in the UK . It was one of those things that was kind of birthed out of that . But I really love singing about the faithfulness of God . I love declaring victory of who God is in my life , what I ’ ve seen him do in my life . But there is something special when we completely remove ourselves from the equation and we just say , you are worthy of praise . Whether you did anything in my life right now or not , you are worthy to be exalted . And so that ’ s what that song is , is I want you to have my whole life because you deserve it . And when we worship God , that is a holy communion . That is a holy thing . And we can get into the whole thing of worship even goes beyond our songs and goes beyond our music , but just the act of declaring God ’ s praises is a holy thing and that ’ s a special thing . And that ’ s kind of just the heartbeat of that song .
[ WM ] Wonderful . Well , your daughter , Cyrus , has such a sweet , lovely voice and a beautiful lyric in “ The Best God ”. I love her descriptive “ the best God ,” because that ’ s how a child would say it . And this song opens up a huge opportunity for churches to include a special moment in worship with a parent and child leading worship . I can envision churches everywhere introducing a special song like this . Have you thought about that dynamic and tell us about how all this came about ?
[ Mack ] Man , I hadn ’ t thought about that dynamic ! And just even you saying that kind of gets me emotional envisioning that , because it is so sweet and tender and I want that perspective . I want the perspective of the way that she sees God and just his goodness and
