So they ’ ve done a cover of a song called “ You ‘ re The Voice ”, which was a huge hit in Australia . It was the biggest song ever in Australia , and a big hit in Europe but never made it in America .
You ‘ re The Voice - John Farnham
And so , the boys have done a cover of that . And I think what I love about that song is that it ’ s challenging you and I and anybody who listens to it , that if we ’ re followers of Jesus to be the voice . Culture is tough at the moment . And so I am so encouraged that a movie about my wife is connecting with a wide demographic and encouraging people to live the life and be louder about Jesus . And my hope is that maybe people who are struggling a little bit will identify with some of our struggles and if they haven ’ t decided to give their life to Jesus that they will after seeing the movie . Because my life , I ’ ve had a wonderful life , and my life became wonderful when I gave myself away and I was no longer focused on self . Amen . And I suppose that ’ s my prayer for this movie .
And your wife loving you through your illness is so beautiful . It takes us deeper . And I think that ’ s true . Love is how we need each other to navigate the hardships .
[ WM ] Amen and amen . So you brought up how Joel portrays you in the movie , and that ’ s actually a final question I wanted to ask you . Did Joel imitate you through all these years within the family , or was this brand new for the movie ?
[ David ] ( laughs ) I had a 70th birthday party probably four years ago . And I had friends come from all around the world , friends from Australia . Before Covid , I was on the road all the time with For King & Country and with Rebecca , and I ’ d always do a devotional every night . I ’ d pull from Chuck Colson or Tim Keller or somebody . And for one season , I don ’ t know why , I would stand up on the tables . But
I think I was always saying , “ Hey , I want people to hear this phenomenal message from our Maker .” And so I would do anything to get their attention . So blow me down what happens on my 70th birthday , Joel stands on the table , there ’ s probably a hundred people at the party , stands on the table and takes me off .
He ’ s a good actor and he scripted a little bit and I ’ ve got , you don ’ t know this about me , Alex , I ’ ve got a number of idiosyncrasies . And he highlighted those pretty well . And at that time we weren ’ t talking about doing them , it was pre-Covid . We weren ’ t talking about doing the movie or anything , but he ’ s on record as saying now that playing me was a good therapy session for him . And since that time , Helen thinks he ’ s a pretty strong-willed guy and I can be pretty strong-willed at times as well . But she thinks that he is more compassionate to me .
[ WM ] That ’ s wonderful . And with the film releasing it ’ ll be in theaters for Mother ’ s Day and what a wonderful way to honor mothers and draw families together by taking them to see this film .
[ WM ] There ’ s a bit of poetic license in there . Like Joel plays me sometimes a bit more emotionally than what I am , but I think you can ’ t just have a movie of someone looking at the camera and looking overwhelmed . There ’ s got to be some action there . But I think that the two people who make me cry in a positive way , are Jesus and Helen . Jesus , because he challenged me to give my life away . And Helen , because she ’ s loved me unconditionally . You and I both know we both have flaws .
