[ WM ] Okay. Back to your own music. You’ ve been able to engage music with folks now from a Christian worldview for 40 years.
[ Steve ] Right.
[ WM ] I believe your songs are still relevant today. How are they hitting in the“ live” context when you go on the tour now?
[ Steve ] It’ s been really interesting. Of course, first off, I get to pick which songs we’ re doing. So, I try to pick the ones that don’ t feel totally dated. And then, but there are songs with smug references to Rush Limbaugh and other folks … some are alive and some are not. But for the most part, they still seem fairly relevant.
[ WM ]“ Whatever Happened to Sin” is still relevant.
[ Steve ] Well, we’ re doing“ Sin for a Season” in concert tonight. Yeah. So, I figured probably one sin song per set.( laughing)
[ WM ] Now you’ re on tour again. The last time I saw you in a full concert was at the Creation Festival about 20 years ago. It had been rained out at Agape Farm, and they moved it to Hershey Park, PA at the last minute. I was on the side of the Alternative Music stage watching your performance and you took those other alternative / rock bands to school as a front man. Now you’ re still jumping around bringing the house down as a front man all these years later. How do you keep up the physicality? Are you traveling with a tour chiropractor?
[ Steve ] I probably should be.( laughing) Yes. I definitely feel it the next day.
I Want To Be A Clone
[ WM ] Let’ s see. History lesson. At the end of“ I Want to Be a Clone”, you throw in the Bob Dylan impersonation from one of his pre-conversion songs … now this was during his three strong Christian records in a row( Slow Train Coming, Saved and Shot of Love)… I think he’ s one of the best Christian songwriters from that era …
[ Steve ] I would not disagree with that.
[ WM ] Did you get any pushback from the record company about the Dylan part of it?
[ Steve ] They didn’ t mind that part, but on“ Meltdown” there was a reference to Dylan and my manager at the time was really not happy about that. He kept pushing me to change it. So originally it was a statement,“ Dylan is a fill-in. The puddle they designed, it’ s going to take a miracle to make his mind”… something like that. And the thing I did was turn it into a question and that semi-satisfied my manager because I wasn’ t used to changing lyrics around. But then he kind of had a good point, 24 June 2026 Subscribe for Free...
