impression of me or my team than I do , and I just need to be aware of that . So what I ’ m doing for the next opportunity that comes up like this in a month for our twentieth anniversary service is , I ’ m going to take the video recording to another level . So I ’ m still going to have all of these resources on Planning Center , but now I ’ m going to video myself talking through these same things and putting it on demand rather than physically going to that campus where you could have issues that come up if you ’ re at a rehearsal . So I ’ m trying to take steps to become a better leader and try to not have that happen .
The other thing I ’ m working on personally as a leader is empathy . I ’ m really working on that , I am around the A-list talent every single day , all I am around are the best … the best singers and musicians . We have over a thousand musicians that are part of our team at different campuses , and I ’ m around the . 5 %. So I need to work on personal empathy and understanding of what its like to be a volunteer , and maybe they haven ’ t had time to practice at that campus or different things . So , I need to continue to work on that personally .
[ WM ] Whether it ’ s satellite campuses like the ones you just described , or a satellite campus that is a new campus for an existing church , what are some best practices for getting everybody on the same page separate from the action items you ’ re putting in PCO ?
[ Chris ] I would almost break that up into three separate things .
So , if you ’ re a new satellite church , how do you make it good outside of Planning Center , is you need to start simple . You need to do very simple songs . You need a group of five or six people , and you don ’ t need any crazy gospel chord substitutions , it needs to be a simple three or four chord worship song , and you need to get really good at doing that . And what I mean by really good , I mean we ’ re all playing with a metronome or a click track and we are locking in with that . So we may spend weeks or months just thinking about that beat . We could take that one song and break it down to the drummer , and were making sure the drummer is locked in . And we ’ re making sure the bass player is locked in with the drummer , and that the guitars are locked in with the rhythm section . We ’ re building that up , so that if we use tracks , that we are locking in on time with the tracks . There is nothing worse than tracks that are perfectly playing on the beat and then a band that is not on the beat , it creates a mess . So we want to get that right with very simple songs , easy to play songs that are building our confidence every week .
On the vocal side , there is a technique side of vocal , and its simple things . If you watch all of
