supplies and MIDI interfaces, at Strymon we often get questions about anything and everything pedalboard related, whether it’ s pedal order, MIDI stuff, pedal fastening, etc. This was a way to be able to answer these types of questions in long form, which also gives us the option to chop up sections and deliver them to folks on social as smaller snippets. Social shorts can be helpful in a different way sometimes, as they can provide valuable information without requiring the viewer to watch the whole episode or series.
[ WM ] The video quality and presentation is top drawer too. Did you have any background in doing this?
[ Sean ] Most kind of you! I’ ve been doing on-camera content professionally since 2009, when we launched the Eleven Rack back at Digidesign / Avid, and that morphed into me doing four camera shoots with no-one else in the room but myself at a number of different companies over the years- so I’ ve definitely put in a bunch of time on both sides of the camera. As a reference for this series, I did a pedalboard build video for us in 2022 that was quite well-received, eventually reaching some 45K views. It was fairly comprehensive at over an hour long, so we knew that long form content could be attractive as long as it was full of good information. I doubt I ever intended for this one to be nearly five hours long split across nine episodes, but sometimes things take on a mind of their own!( laughs)
[ WM ] Another cool aspect of the video series is that the build is not just Strymon pedals in it. Tell us about your approach here?
[ Sean ] Well, I was a commercial session dude / producer / composer for a long while, and unfortunately for my wife I rarely sell gear( chuckling). This is intended to be a permasession board for me, so I wanted to have a bunch of my favorite options available, which meant that there are a number of other company’ s products on the board. At Strymon we really do feel like a part of the pedal community, so ensuring that the board was a real-world build was important. The hope is that the other companies whose pedals are on the board are happy to see their stuff included, and that they feel comfortable sharing the content when their products are talked about and used. That has certainly been the case with Morningstar, who gets the most screentime of any product or company mentioned, including us! Ha!
Ultimately, we just wanted to create something educational that had real value for those watching. Something that they didn’ t have to sign up or pay for to get access to – and if in the process they feel like all of the Strymon stuff on the board sounds killer that’ s great, but if not it’ s totally cool. Hopefully it just brings a bit more love into the world, you know?
[ WM ] You were kind enough to stage the same release of first episode with our first WM Update newsletter. That was remarkable to see
