Rural to Urban Migration

A long time ago only 5% of the world’s population lived in urban communities, nowadays the majority of people are living in urban communities as opposed to rural ones. There are many reasons behind this, this huge migration from rural to urban started off in the mid 18th century in Britain. This was happening because of the industrialization and the growth of agriculture. Since most farmers jobs were being replaced by mechanized tools the farmers set off to urban communities to find jobs working in factories. The migration became a worldwide phenomenon. People that were migrating to places like the urban areas of Canada made the population rise by 13%. This huge migration caused economies in many countries to flourish and made it possible to expand and make many cities inside of countries.

There were many urban changes being made around the world, especially after World War 2. That was when the middle class grew and people were having big families. This meant more cars being bought, more houses that were placed in the suburbs, many preferred living in the suburbs of North America but most could not afford that lifestyle. During this time there were many changes being made to the new core, near core, and far periphery cities. Outside the old core there was a much faster build of the economy and it got developed quite quickly. Ultimately there were some problems in the old core countries though. They had many economic problems like the fiscal squeeze. That meant that there wasn’t enough tax money to be able to provide all the services needed in a city. This was happening in old core countries because other countries around the world were developing faster and the old core couldn’t keep up with the changes. There were also social problems involved in the old core. Poverty, It was a serious urban problem in the developed countries. Poverty turned into an infinite regress because people living in the inner cities and not the suburbs weren’t getting a great education therefore couldn’t get a proper job and wasn’t able to make money.
