Long Island sprinted out of the gate against Wagner and cruised to a 74-48 win at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. The Blackbirds opened the game with a 13-1 run and rode a sti?ing defensive effort to their 10th straight win. Junior Kyle Johnson led the way with 21 points, while freshman Julian Boyd added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Long Island (13-12, 9-5) built a 13-1 lead at the 12:27 mark as the Blackbirds took care of business on both ends of the ?oor to open the contest, forcing Wagner to miss its ?rst 10 shots of the game, while senior Ron Manigault imposed his will on the glass collecting seven of his gamehigh 12 rebounds in the opening 9:05 and denying the Seahawks any second chances. Wagner managed to claw back into the contest and close within 19-13 , but LIU rattled off eight straight points to make it 27-13. A nine-point halftime de?cit was as close as Wagner could get the rest of the way. The Blackbirds pulled away with a 19-4 run midway through the second period. After Wagner pulled within 37-28 LIU and Boyd responded with the decisive spurt. Boyd scored all 13 of his second half points in the run and hit the last four points in a row and gave LIU a 56-32 lead with 6:37 to play. A three-pointer by freshman Michael Culpo gave LIU its biggest lead of the day at 67-36. Long Island dominated the game defensively, holding Wagner to just 27.0 percent shooting on the day, including 2-of-14 from three-point range. The Blackbirds also controlled the glass, outrebounding Wagner, 58-32, and outscoring the Seahawks, 36-16 in the paint. Seniors Ron Manigault and Tyrone Mattison set the tone early on and Long Island cruised to an 85-71 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) in the Wellness Center. Mattison came of the bench to pour in 11 points in the opening half to propel LIU (14-12, 10-5) to its 11th straight home win. LIU raced out to a 12-2 lead in the opening 3:58 and never looked back.
