Long Island ran into a hot-shooting Sacred Heart squad, falling 101-72, at the William H. Pitt Center. Despite four Blackbirds scoring in double-?gures, they trailed throughout the contest as the Pioneers drained 14 three-pointers on the afternoon. Sacred Heart jumped out to a 6-0 lead to open the day and never looked back. A three-pointer from sophomore David Hicks and a pair of foul shots from freshman Julian Boyd made it 18-10 in the early going, but that was the closest margin the rest of the day as SHU responded with three-pointers on the next four possessions, including three by Chauncey Hardy to push the lead to 30-11 at the 9:36 mark. Long Island (11-12, 7-5) missed eight straight shots at one point and fell further behind as Sacred Heart continued to rain three-pointers. The Pioneers hit 9-of-13 treys in the ?rst half, including Corey Hassan’s as time expired to build a 48-27 halftime lead. A 17-5 spurt early in the second half for Sacred Heart effectively put the game out of reach. Hassan had three trifectas during the spurt and a layup by Shane Gibson gave SHU its largest lead of the day at 74-39. The Blackbirds were unable to get any closer than when sophomore Kyle Johnson made a driving layup to settle the ?nal margin. Boyd was joined by junior Jaytornah Wisseh and freshman Lucas Faggiano with 11 points each, while Hicks added 10. The Blackbirds managed to shoot 85.7 percent from the line, but that was a lone bright spot offensively as they shot just 31 percent from the ?eld and were outrebounded, 39-26. Hassan led all scorers with 25 points, while Hardy and Gibson added 16 points apiece. Sacred Heart ?nished the day shooting 65.0 percent from the ?eld and 69.6 percent from three-point range.
