Long Island went toe-to-toe with Mount St. Mary’s and prevailed with a gritty 76-70 win at the Wellness Center. In a game that saw the teams go back-and-forth taking each others’ best shots, the Blackbirds managed to hold a lead for most of the night absorbing repeated strikes from the Mount in what amounted to a heavyweight boxing match on the hardwood. LIU had ?ve players in double-?gures, paced by freshman Julian Boyd with 18 points and extended its home win streak to eight games. Long Island (11-11, 7-4) broke a 49-49 tie on a layup by Boyd with 10:27 to play and quickly pushed the lead to 56-49 after a three-pointer from sophomore Kyle Johnson. That was the Blackbirds’ largest lead of the night and they didn’t allow the Mount to get closer than 58-56 following a Markus Mitchell layup. As was the case all night when Mount St. Mary’s appeared to be making a run, LIU responded with a push of its own. Junior Jaytornah Wisseh converted a layup and sparked a run of ?ve straight to build the margin back to 63-56. The Blackbirds sealed the win from there, going 14-of-16 from the foul line in the ?nal 5:05 and snapped the Mountaineers’ eight-game win streak in the process. Boyd matched a career-high in scoring, while adding seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Johnson ?nished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Wisseh added 15. Freshman Lucas Faggiano scored a career-high 10 points with ?ve assists. Sam Atupem led the Mount with 14 points, while Kelly Beidler added 13. Mount took a 26-25 lead before LIU managed to take a 30-26 lead into halftime. Long Island Blackbirds • 2009-10 Basketball • www.liuathletics.com 44
