Course Outline
The course comprises two mandatory units, ‘Understanding Language’ and ‘Using Language’, which enable
learners to focus on the skills required to understand and use detailed language, and to integrate the skills of
listening and talking, reading, and writing across these units.
Rationale
Purpose and Aims
Learners are given the opportunity to build on prior learning, by applying the skills they have already
acquired and developed in their first modern language (French or German), while at the same time
developing skills for life, skills for learning and skills for work.
Information regarding typical learners who might take the course
This is an accelerated course. A typical learner will be achieving Level 4 (Consolidating/Secure) in some, if not
all skills, in French or German by the end of S3.
Entry to the Course is at the discretion of the school. However, it would be beneficial for the learner to have
the skills and knowledge required by relevant experiences and outcomes from the broad, general education.
Course Structure and Conditions of Award
Learners must pass mandatory units, plus the course assessment.
Assessment
Units are internally assessed. Course assessment in listening, reading and writing is externally assessed.
Assessment of talking is conducted internally, and subject to SQA verification.
Progression
Higher in S5 followed by Advanced Higher in S6.
