Course Outline
Each course comprises two mandatory units, ‘Understanding Language’ and ‘Using Language’, which enable
learners to focus on the skills required to understand and use language, and to integrate the skills of listening
and talking, reading, and writing across these units.
Rationale
Purpose and Aims
Learners are given the opportunity to continue their acquisition and development of the four skills
mentioned above, while at the same time developing skills for life, skills for learning and skills for work.

Modern Languages Courses are relevant for a wide range of learners.

Provides opportunities for learners to build on prior learning in the context of a broad general education.
National 4
Is appropriate for those who wish to develop further the skills of understanding and using a foreign language.

Gives learners the opportunity to make more specialised progress in the foreign language.
Entry to these Courses is at the discretion of the school. However, it would be beneficial for the learner to
have the skills and knowledge required by relevant experiences and outcomes from the broad, general
education.
