Keeping Balance & Staying True
After 18 years of working in an educational setting, I knew I was getting tired of sitting all day
at a computer, feeling dissatisfied with my job, and always being on someone else’s timeline.
After the births of my two daughters, I even tried working shift work at a hospital, which
did not appeal to me. I wanted to be able to work from home, foster my creative side, meet
people, enjoy my work, and feel satisfied. Oh yeah, and all this on my own schedule.
Creating my new work world, LauraBella Custom Cakery, has been both challenging and satisfying. Longer hours
and challenging designs paralleled with amazing creations and happy clients seems to balance everything out. Having
the luxury of being the only cakery in the greater Edmonton region with a cake studio in my backyard, affords me
the chance to maintain a healthy work/home life balance. I am able to ‘go to work’ after dropping my daughters off at
school and pick them up afterwards. Drive them to all their activities and still be able to come home, run in and out
of the studio checking on cakes in the oven and get dinner ready at the same time. Balance means different things to
different people. To me, balance means being able to enjoy my family, help my clients and challenge myself every day.
I believe in order to maintain a healthy work/home life
balance, I need to be true to myself. I do this by being
committed to values that I will not compromise. Honesty,
integrity, compassion, loyalty and humor are a few of the core
values that make me feel whole and enable me to keep that
balance. I also feel that punctuality is just as important. If a
person cannot be on time, how do you trust they will follow
through with their order?

As an artist … a cake artist, I find inspiration from all sorts of
feelings and sights and my clients. In terms of wedding cakes,
usually the couple meets with me with some vision of what
they want for their wedding cake. From photos and speaking
with the couple, I design their dream wedding cake! I take
a photo of every couple I meet so I can remember them as
people, but also to help me make their cake. I remember our
conversation, the things they like, the way they talk. All this
helps me put that personal touch into their cake – because it’s
the people that matter the most when I’m creating a memory
with them.
