Understanding Your Leadership Style
There are many barriers to becoming a successful leader. One area I focus on with students
and clients who want to become strong leaders is understanding and applying the principles of
leadership. Client’s struggle to take a leadership point of view, meaning many managers and leaders
are unsure with what needs to be done. They struggle to understand all of the forces at play and
for some individual’s there is also a lack of courage to act and make things better. True leadership
includes self-leadership, strategic tasks, influencing others, designing functional organizations and
managing change. Together these elements produce results that include customer satisfaction,
internal efficiency, learning, financial return and creating a balanced scorecard.
Women do not do enough to promote themselves or other women. Women are not comfortable with celebrating their
successes and sometimes believe our success and accomplishments will speak for themselves. Their success was a result of
the company and team support and very little to do with their leadership style. In today’s fast-paced environment women
need to be able to articulate how and why they are successful. Become comfortable communicating what makes you such a
Rock Star because if you can’t, how can anyone else share your story.
For example, are you a Servant and Transformational Leader or both?
A servant leader ensures other’s needs are made a priority, which enables employees to
grow, become healthier, increase their knowledge and become empowered. The leader
engages in activities focused on helping the employee achieve their goals. A servant
leader engages in one-on-one monthly coaching with their direct reports, focusing on
the strengths of the individual and helping them identify specific key activities and
skill sets, which support their success. The session builds on employee competencies,
accountabilities and self-actualization that cultivates positive work place behavior and
attitudes. A servant leader’s leadership philosophy is based on a set of principles that
includes empowerment, quality, team building, participatory management and a high
level of personal ethics.
A Transformational Leader encourages and motivates employees to accomplish
extraordinary results by aligning the goals and objectives of the organization with
the employees. The leader becomes the standard for employees to respect, admire
and trust, inspiring their employees to take up the challenge by demonstrating a
collaborative commitment to shared goals. A transformational leader consistently
seeks input and feedback from front-line staff, other departments, customers and
stakeholders when building departmental goals. The ongoing feedback contributes to
constant and continuous improvement in daily processes and procedures. The open
and honest communication is a catalyst for innovation and helps build organizational
capabilities and efficiencies.
