Mahadevi Verma
Mahadevi Verma is one of the significant contributors to freedom fighting,
although her fame is focused on just poetry, she was an educationist and
a freedom fighter. She lived from March 26th, 1907 to September
11th, 1987. She was called ‘Modern Meera’ From 1917-1938 she was
a part of the literary movement of romanticism in Hindi Poetry named
Chaayavaad. Additionally, she participated in several gatherings
where poets met.
Personal Life And Education
She was originally from Farrukhabad, she
studied at Crossthwaite Girls’ School in
Allahabad. She was initially put in a convent
school, later on, she was keen and stubborn on
getting admitted at Crosthwaite Girls College in
Allahabad.
The hostel she lived in at Crosthwaite, taught
her the essence of unity. She learned it by
seeing the way students from different regions
came together and lived there.

Her roommate and Senior named Subhadra
Kumari Chauhan caught her secret of her
being talented with writing great poetry. Post
that, the two of them spent their leisure time
writing poetry. Her friend used to write in
Khariboli, later on, she learned it as well.
‘Mere bachpan ke din’ was one of their poetry
they wrote together, they were unstoppable,
they participated in seminars together and
sent their poems for publishing.
