When I think of wine , it ’ s white in the summer and red in the winter . Bob says that there are exceptions , there are also red wines that are very light and easy for the summer . But , also here people tend to go for more heavy and complex red wines in the winter because it fits the atmosphere . If it ’ s a white wine that you ’ re looking for , there are also many which can fit the colder weather ! Call them winter whites . White winter wines are not so popular , but doesn ’ t that make them even more interesting ? These are wines from grapes like Marsanne , Roussanne , Viognier , and Gewürztraminer . Gluhwein ( in English – mulled wine ) is also very popular in the Dutch winter . These are spiced and sweetened red wines which are served hot and can be enjoyed during cold rainy days . Bob has a great recipe for us - “ If you want to make gluhwein yourself just buy a decent pinot noir / shiraz at the supermarket , and heat it on the stove with sugar , cinnamon , and oranges . That ’ s the basic gluhwein but you can go as crazy as you want with it . Cloves and apples are also a nice touch .” I heard so many funny stories about gluhwein throughout the years , since it ’ s so sweet and fun to drink , people tend to lose count of how much they drank and just get completely wasted . There ’ s something fun about sitting inside with friends or family , covered in blankets and sipping too much gluhwein . Goes great with Christmas as well !
