GET TO KNOW YOUR BOARD MEMBER
Mike Hurly
SBAND Board Member
What is your current position? I am a partner with the Traynor Law Firm in Devils Lake.
What is your hometown, college attended, and law school attended? My hometown is Dickinson, N. D. I attended North Dakota State University for my undergraduate degree and University of North Dakota for Law School.
What led you to a career in law? While I was studying to be a Catholic priest, Monsignor Jeffrey Wald introduced me to the Traynor family. When I left the seminary, I was going to continue my studies in philosophy at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. Shortly before leaving, I met my future wife and was“ strongly” encouraged by Monsignor Wald to find a career path that would put food on my table. He explained there was not a high demand for philosophers but since I liked to read, write, and argue, perhaps I should go to law school. The Traynor family encouraged me and the rest, as they say, is history.
How long have you been on the SBAND Board? Since June 2016.
What other involvement have you had with SBAND prior to being on the Board? I was the past chair of the Family Law Section. I was also an editorial board member for The Gavel.
What is your favorite quote?“ Do as adversaries do in law, strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends.” William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew, Act I, sc. 2
What is the last book you read( good or bad)? The last book I read was Embers of War. I am a voracious reader and come from a family of readers. I have a personal library of over 2,000 books and read multiple books at once. I log the books I have read in a journal, which is a tradition handed down by my grandfather.
