Goodbye, Coach Nissalke
First Jazz Coach After Move to Utah Passes Away
T
his August, the Utah Jazz said goodbye to
a man who was an integral part of the
team’s history. Tom Nissalke was the team’s
head coach aft er the team moved from New
Orleans to Utah in 1979. He served as head
coach for two seasons, earning a 60-124 record
during that time. Prior to taking his position
with the Jazz, Nissalke had been a coach in the
NBA and the old ABA.
Although he left the team before the Jazz
was purchased by Larry and Gail Miller,
Nissalke was honored aft er his passing by team
leadership and LHM Sports & Entertainment.
In a statement released aft er Nissalke’s passing,
the organization said, “Gail Miller and the
Miller Family, along with the Jazz organization,
are saddened to hear about the passing of
former head coach Tom Nissalke. As our
fi rst head coach when the team moved in
1979 from New Orleans to Salt Lake City, he
was instrumental in helping the franchise
transition to its new home. We express
our appreciation for all he did as the Jazz
coach and for introducing the NBA to our
community. Our thoughts are with Coach
Nissalke’s daughter, son, grandchildren and
friends during this time.” ◆
