GROWTH BEGINS WHERE COMFORT ENDS

In 2018, I went to Greenland to accomplish a goal I had set my sights on years earlier— driving across the ice-covered island from south to north. Our team traveled 21 days in three specially equipped Toyota Hiluxes, carrying fuel and supplies across more than 5,000 kilometers of some of the world’ s most challenging terrain. In sub-zero conditions, we encountered crevasses, whiteouts and multiple mechanical failures. Despite these challenges, we successfully completed the journey, becoming the first to traverse this largely uncharted territory.
Throughout my life and career, I have come to realize that meaningful and challenging work often yields the greatest insights and opportunities for personal growth. The expedition across Greenland was no exception.
One of the lessons learned is about people. The chemistry and teamwork within our group were exceptional. In freezing winds, during constant repairs and running on very little sleep, it would have been easy for tempers to flare. Yet, we never had a single disagreement. Everyone supported one another and contributed to our safe return. In our workplaces and in extreme environments, a great team makes the impossible achievable. It also reinforced in me the value of surrounding myself with quality people.
The second lesson is that adventure and growth do not require crossing some distant frontier. Adventure can be as simple as camping in a tent with your kids in the backyard or taking a family trip to the closest national park. You do not need a Hilux or an ice field— just curiosity, courage and the willingness to try something new. Set aside excuses, and go as big as your means allow. You’ ll not only build lasting memories, but the experiences and life lessons are priceless.
Greenland reminded me why we chase big goals in the first place. The experience tested us in ways we couldn’ t have planned for, but every kilometer deepened my appreciation for what we can accomplish when we choose to take on something meaningful.
