community outreach activities . Real Life also helps youth with homework , financial literacy and college readiness .
Through a grant to Camp Kesem - University of Utah Chapter , children impacted by a parent ’ s cancer diagnosis will be able to attend summer camp with peers who understand what they are going through . Local chapters are based at colleges and operated by student volunteers , who receive leadership training from Kesem headquarters . Students serve as camp counselors , with nurses , mental health providers and other experienced staff providing additional support .
A donation to The Episcopal Diocese of Utah is benefiting Art Empowers , an after-school and summer camp program for children and teens who are members of the Ute Tribe living on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation . Local Native American women provide leadership and mentoring , while youth participate in visual arts and crafts , movement and drama , dancing and storytelling , and Native American games . Program outcomes show that participants experience an increased sense of inclusion and self-esteem , improved high school graduation rates , and greater appreciation for Native music , artisan and dance traditions .
The Family Support Center of Southwestern Utah is a nonprofit that works to strengthen families . LHM Charities funded the organization ’ s two crisis / respite care nurseries , which deliver services to children and parents throughout nine different counties in Utah . These nurseries provide temporary emergency shelter for children who are removed from homes by law enforcement until foster care or kinship arrangements can be made . The nurseries also prevent abuse by providing a secure space for children to stay when
parents feel too overwhelmed to safely care for them . In addition , respite care is available for parents who need childcare assistance when accessing community support services such as addiction recovery classes , medical appointments and employment training .
A grant was also provided to the Visual Art Institute for community outreach art classes for youth and women . The program includes inschool art workshops provided in
Friends of the Salt Lake County Children ’ s Justice Center Visual Art Institute Family Support Center of Southwestern Utah Episcopal Community Services - Art Empowers Youthlinc - Real Life Program Camp Kesem - University of Utah Chapter
five Utah school districts : Salt Lake , Canyons , Granite , Alpine and Jordan .
